History of film posters

Good and Bad examples of film posters.

These Poster's follow the same conventions of the original animation posters back in the late 18th century. The main characters at in the foreground and other relevant characters, vehicles and events are behind them. However, critics have been commenting on marvels advertising techniques, by saying that their posters are very similar. For example the two posters above.

This film poster is very individual, and i think this is only acceptable, and possible to take the risk if the film company is well known and the film is advertised on a lot of other platforms. However it can very very eye catching because the space man in very central.

The head shot in this poster, and position of the models is awful. The text is also very ammeter looking. the women needs to be positioned much more central.

Audience research

Audience research

horror audience theories; -Carroll(1990) notes that horror films may attract audiences because it is outside the viewers everyday experience.-Zuckerman(1979)   high sensation seeking people are more likely to be attracted to horror films because of the excitement and scare factor.
-Zillman and Puallus(1993) People seem to enjoy the violence in horror movies when it is directed against those who they think deserve it.

'The male dominated genre'

it has been argued that the development of horror films are dominated by men. I chose four films, old and new to research into and find out if this is approximately true.
Psycho- writer and director, male.
The exorcist- writer and director. male.
The cabin in the woods - writer and director, male.
The ring - writer and director, male.

Plot synopsis

Plot Synopsis.

The film will be set in bishops stortford, an old historical town where a young ( 16-18) group of girls attend a private school for girls. This group of girls are slightly rebellious, despite their parents upper class backgrounds, and hang out together most days after school. One winter's afternoon after school they come across an old railroad in amongst farmers land. The bridge provided them with perfect shelter from the stormy british weather, and they found it a perfect place for their daily gossip, smoking and relaxing time. A place for them all to hide from their overly strict parents who all think their daughters are perfect angels.
On the third day of attending to the railroad, one of the girls jokes about it being haunted by a girl who got killed by a train 100 years before. An individual paranoid, and not as rebellious, character researches the bridge and its haunting when she gets home that night. She finds that a young girl did die on the rotted tracks 100 years ago, and that rumours say that once disturbed, the girls ghost will cause almost impossible accidents to the people involved.
Once warned, the other girls in the group do not believe the ghost story and continue to go to the old railroad and arrange to have a drink night there that Friday evening, whilst the paranoid girl ignores the others from then on and goes straight home after school.
at the drinks evening, the girls an older brother to buy them alcohol from a little shop in the small town. when he returns to the railroad with the drinks he is curious as to why they are hanging about here and notes ' its a bit spooky'. he then leaves them to it. as the night goes on, the girls begin to hear and see things, such as the bushes moving, and whispers in the wind. They continue to joke about the haunting and carry on with their evening. Throughout the night, some of the girls actually start to get scared, and begin to worry that the farmers are trying to scare them for being on the land, but the ghost does appear and 'accidently' causes and girl to fall over, they begin to laugh about it but then she suddenly gets dragged into the bushes and scraped across farmers feilds. The girls sprint in different directions, faint, fall over etc.
The next scene is in the morning and two of the girls are woken up by a farmer, whom is joking about under age drinking and jokingly tells them to move so he can plow the fields. The  girls go home knowing that one of their friends are missing, one of the girls gives in and confesses to here mother and tell her what they were doing and that a girl is missing. The mum announces that ghosts stories are rubbish and that the missing girl would have probably woken up and stumbled home.
Over the course of a few days, the people involved started dyeing, the mother was involved in a car crash and died. One of the girls was chased by a car with no one driving it and dragged underneath it, another girl woken in the night and choked by nothing.
The paranoid girl had found out about all the incidents through the news and had not left her house. she worked out that anyone that did not believe in the ghost story, would be killed by the girl. which is why the two girls left were still alive because they where quite curious and frightened in the beginning but did not confess to this. The paranoid girl informs her parents and the 2 other girls, the parents do not believe and begin to think she is going insane.
People continue to die as the rumours where spreading and people began to investigate and soon the paranoid girl went to the railroad, screaming at people to stay away or believe. she did not get killed because she believed in the ghost. Her parents, the police, and doctors came to try and make her stop, and took her away screaming on a stretcher 'im not mad'. as they were taking her away her parents and the policeman got dragged away by the ghosts powers and were violently murdered.

The young girl was still sent to an asylum, although she was right all along, and she could never forget about the events because she would stop believing, therefore the ghosts would come back.

Idea Tree

In my 'idea tree' i noted that theatrical trailers give too much away, and after reading this article from the entertainment weekly, i feel much more confident in my choice in style of trailer, which is a long teaser.

The key point of the trailer

The key point of the trailer.

The key point of my trailer, will be to scare, and excite the target audience so that they want to watch the entire film. What many horror film trailer's do is give away too much of the narrative, and they leave the audience with the knowledge of what is going to happen. The reason that the target audience watch this genre of film and trailer is to scare themselves, and by already knowing the basic narrative, the scare factor will not be as great when watching the actual film.

The purpose of my trailer is the mildly explain the film, scare the audience and create a huge anticipation leading up to the films release.

http://www.drmarkwomack.com/pdfs/horrormovies.pdf in this interesting read by Stephan king, he notes that people watch horror movie's 'for fun', particularly the young, and to show that 'we can'. Friends and families often joke about who would be the most frightened in a film, and compete against each other, it could even be a peer pressure situation. Therefore Maybe within the marketing stage of my film, I can introduce a competition or slogan, to encourage younger viewers to compete.

Horror film timeline

This is a timeline that i made. it is interesting to compare horror films to our society, for example; at the time of the great depression in america, and when hitler striped jews of their civil rights, real 'madmen' where controlling our societies. This is reflected in frankenstien, which was released around this time.
As the 60s emerged, the horror film genre took a turn, film makers began to realise that it was humans who where the real monsters. this is shown in the film phyco(1960). in 1973, the exorcist was released and shows just how our society has changed too. it shows the evil inside of us.

Best conversion video edit.

Another conversation practise

Creating this conversation video was very difficult, because of matching up the dialog. however i do think it is a good second attempt. On the other hand, there is a lot of room for improvement. For example, the pace is way too slow, and some of the shots could use reactions shots. Also, in the shot reverse shot clips the camera layout is bad because too much of the closest persons head is in the shot. also, there is too much space on the left of the opposite person.
In my next conversation video therefore, i must consider pace, camera layout, and be sure that my jump cuts are accurate and use continuity.

Doors.

This task was relatively easy, but also a bit rushed so not done superbly. it has helped me understand the importance of pace within shots, so that they do not become boring or look unprofessional. This task will help when if i were to make an action or horror movie, it is also a basic skill needed for the making of videos.

If i were to make a film trailer i would....

The different types of film trailers are not as hard to define as music videos, in fact the differences are quite huge and easily noticed. This is why choosing to create a film trailer would be harder because you cannot easily choose the best or easiest conventions from each genres, like you can a music video. For example when creating a music video I could create a performance style piece, but it could be a weird performance so it could link with the concept style. With film trailers, this is not as easy.

I think creating a horror film trailer would be the best in terms of point scoring. This genre is good to create a pace with the music. for example in this film trailer when the shots change with the music beats.

Conventions such as the 'slow zoom' and spooky voice over's will be really fun to create. The horror genre of film trailers is probably the only genre that sticks to the conventions, for example all of the horror trailers I have watched have scary music. Therefore, if I were to create a film trailer, the horror genre would be the most recognisable and I will have a lot of support from research because almost all the horror trailers share the same conventions, so I will always know if I am going along the right lines. Also, it allows me to throw in my own convention, and my horror trailer stick out from all the rest!

if i was to create a music video i would want to....

Choosing between the three styles of music videos, concept, performance and narrative, would be extremely difficult because after researching music videos I found that very few fit into just one category. For example; arctic monkeys brainstorm has been classed by many as a performance video. However, in my opinion I think it has a hint of concept style video in it.

many videos are hard to define and therefore I would create my video with a bit of all three styles in it.

The reason why I would do this is because it will attract almost all consumers, and the idea would be something along the lines of the band or singer performing the song in lots of different places. however there would be a narrative story about another character whom is nothing to do with the band/artist, and the artists would pop up in the background of the scenes in this storyline. This characters story would have something to do with the song lyrics and words but the storyline would be emphasised for audience attraction and entertainment. Therefore, the performance part of my video idea would be the actual artist/s singing or playing in different locations and settings, however the fact that they are randomly singing in the middle of a town for example creates a concept element to the video. The narrative element would be created from the spate character and this storyline, as noted, would not be completely relatable to the song and therefore adds another concept element to the music video.

The advantages to the style I chose would be that the audience is guaranteed to be drawn into the video what ever their taste. The concept would have to be quite strange to allow the video to become well known, and maybe the narrative should be less relatable to the song. The huge disadvantage to this technique is that all the different styles in one may be too much for the viewer and they may decide that it is too unusual, although my research shows that music videos are pretty hard to beat on the strange scale.

first convosation video

storyboard;

Awkward convosation video;

I think this video is very humorous and that this is created by the selection of close up showing facial expressions. I also think that the variety of shots also helps with the convocation, particularly close ups of the dog, clearly showing that he is not replying and adding to the humour. I think the music all the way through adds to the awkward atmosphere and allows the viewer to understand what the creator is wanting them to feel like.

I do think however, that the clicking of the on/off button on the camera at the start and end of clips makes the video less professional, which will be something to take into account when making another. also; the background noise of aeroplanes and birds for example limits the voice record, therefore microphones may be of good use when I make any other videos which dialog. this clip could have also been longer, with more dialog.

Transition work

Introduction to the male gaze theory;

The gaze theory and concept of 'gaze' can be thought about in three ways; how men look at women, how women look at themselves and how women look at other women. Laura mulvey believes that film and media audiences have to view characters from the prospective of the heterosexual male. Music videos play a big part in this theory in terms of support because of the lyrics to the song, anther concept is camera shots, for example in the film mean girls, when we first meet the 'prettiest' girls in schools to show they have all the power because they look the best and wear the least clothes. Jonathon Schroeder(1998) goes as far to say that the gazer is superior to the whom or what is being gazed at, which supports Mulvey's theory because she implies that younger girls are being 'brainwashed' into having to look a certain way. However her theory collides with Schroeder's because she notes that men look at women as objects, so they are not superior to these men.
The theory can also be flipped and used as the female gaze. Many directors will use the best looking actors to play, for example, action characters. Action films are stereotypically for males however if women have someone to 'gaze' at, the film/ video's audience will become broader.

video one.

This music video uses more of a male stereotype rather than female, because it shows how the men follow the women around and look up to her. The mediation of the boys is the video is huge, reality is that they generally like writing songs and singing them, however due to the media's must have alterations, the boys are portrayed to be female obsessed and represented in that way because younger girls will think that the boys will chase after them like they do in the video. The women in fact, is represented to be normal, and serious about her job (directing) however the stereotype is still in place because of her short dress and tight underwear shown in the video. Business women in real life generally wear suits, with short hair pulled away from their face, they do not wear underwear in the work place. For the sake, and humour, of the video this is to some extent necessary. However; the women wearing what she is is an extreme case of mediation. the selection of camera shots for example, shows the audience her legs and bum before anything else. The representation of women has serious effects on young girls in the real world.

video two.

mileyyy from leah on Vimeo.

This music video gives strong support toward the male gaze theory being true. because it explains the way men and women look at women, the video shows that Miley is trying to do this herself. From recent news, everyone is aware that she cut her hair HERSELF, and chooses her revealing clothes, HERSELF.  This is evidence that Miley is using the theory and the media to her advantage. She wants men to watch her videos and want her, and she wants women to watch her videos and see how grown up she is now, as she craves fame for her current work, not the young soap star whom she is so well known for.
The theory can apply to this video so well because the clothing, camera shots, dance moves and more just scream 'look at me'. this is a clear case of the media creating a stereotype in order to claim fame.

video three.

lolipop from leah on Vimeo.

This video can explain the classic case of male gaze theory back in 1975. women are seen as objects, visual pleasure and basically a mans confidence boost. the girls in this video are used for a few reasons. 1 is to attract a male audience, because mostly women will watch the video to watch the male artist. One of the huge criticisms of Mulvey's theory is that since 1980, there has been an increase in male nudity in the media, to attract women. In this video, lil' wayne is shown somewhat nude throughout the video to draw in a female auidnece. this then leads on to the fact that the stereotyped women in the video are there to send a message to women, that they have to look or dress like these women to be able to be around lil' wayne.

conversation video

I am really happy with the outcome of this video,  I feel that the music and use of a large variety of shots made it look professional, shots include a long shot (when entering), panning, close ups, shot reverse shots, over the shoulder shots. the elements of zoom text and more also add to the positive effects. I think that it could be of more quality however and that the use of microphones may help the sound quality to cut of the surrounding noise such as wind and aeroplanes.
If I had to make another convocation video I would plan it better and in advance, I would also use a tripod to ensure a still camera. this excesise has also taught me that maybe not shooting in order will help the quality, for example; keeping the camera still on a tripod and making the actors say all they're lines in one take and editing it into the right order. I may do this next time I shoot a video.

Short film storyboard/shot planning

this story board can help me to ensure i have used a range of shots, it will also help me when filming my short film. I can see before i begin filming that some things are unnecessary and some need improving. I can also ensure that my shots are in an understandable standard. For example starting with a close up and ending that scene with a long shot, or visa versa.
Basic camera shots...
